Tragic Collision Near Delmas Claims Ten Lives, Injures 24

Ten people were tragically killed in a collision between a minibus taxi and a bus-truck on the R42 near Delmas, Mpumalanga, early on Monday morning, 24 June 2024. 

Eight of the victims were in the minibus taxi, including the driver, and two were in the bus-truck. Additionally, 24 people sustained serious injuries; 18 from the bus-truck and six from the taxi, and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The minibus taxi was travelling towards Emalahleni and had initially been on the N12 from Johannesburg before veering onto the R42. It then collided with the bus-truck, which was heading to Bronkhorstspruit. 

An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the crash, with reports indicating that the minibus driver was attempting to return to the N12 from the R42 when the accident occurred.

Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed the fatalities and injuries, emphasising the need for caution on the roads. 

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Jackie Macie, expressed shock at the accident, urging motorists to be more careful to prevent such tragedies. He also extended condolences to the affected families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
